Default Engine Bay Wiring and Vacuum Line Mess

Hello everyone! The previous owner of my XJ left a mess in the engine bay, and my boyfriend and I are having a lot of trouble sorting it out. Many of the wires are spliced together from different colors, and a household extension cord was used for a few of them. We have only been able to find a few of the connections using diagrams, partially because most of the wires were cut or detached. Also, part of the vacuum system is from a Ford, and even that seems to be hacked up.

Does anyone know a way to tell which wires or vacuum lines connect to which others, or any helpful hints about this? Thank you a lot, any help is appreciated.

Go to a salvage yard that has several hopefully somewhat intact Jeeps and take pictures of the engine bay area.

Wide shots and closeups.

She'll need to have photos of a 1987 to 1990 only.

Yes, the Renix 87-90 is quite different from the later HOs.

My 90 is correct, but I deleted and modified some vacuum lines. If the op posts some pics of her problems I'm pretty sure I could get it straightened out. As I said I've been all over these harnesses.

Thank you all for responding! Sorry it's taken so long, we didn't have a computer for a while. I'll try to get my boyfriend to take a picture of the engine bay and I'll get him to look through the responses.
Thank you all again! We're having no luck with either of my Jeeps.

Here's the pictures of the engine bay. A while back my boyfriend went through the bay and put neon green tape around the end of anything that was disconnected - on the driver's side, there are several, but none of those are the ones he's concerned about, he just hasn't put them together yet.

On the cowling in front of the windshield is the infamous extension cord, and the A/C wires he was gonna' leave disconnected because he's deleting it soon anyway.

Thank you all for your help, we really appreciate it!

Let's start with the past pic, stuff by the blower motor. The blue is a vent. All those colored lines work the shift motor on the front axle. The plug there looks like it either goes to the blower motor or the 4wd indicator switch which is in the corner underneath the coolant tank. The two with the connector are for the underhood light. The larger hose you put up on your cowl closest to the valve cover looks like evap which goes to your intake. The stuff coming off the battery is b.s. they got the way wrong cable. The one hanging loose doesn't need to be there and the damn main cable running to the starter should be way shorter. That other vacuum line on the cowl in the back might be hvac, does your heater control stuff work or does it only blow through defrost?..... the Orange one connected to the black one up front looks like it should go to the ac, is there a ring terminal at the end?.... that's what I got off the top of my head..... ill try and have a look see under my hood tomorrow when I'm reunited with my baby.

Thank you guys so much! You're helping more than any of our friends could! Hopefully we'll even get a chance to get to the Jeep. My boyfriend just bought an old truck that needs a motor put into it.
Thank you all again! You're life savers!
