You dont have to overbore to re-ring. These engines have iron rings which actually wear quicker then moly/chrome. So generally barring any catastrophic engine failure or out of round cylinders a good hone on the cylinders and set of rings gapped and clocked right you should be good. One good thing to do is make sure you mark your pistons b/c I have heard that some of the Jeep engines they had different sized pistons in each bore. I would personally go back with iron rings as they are more forgiving in dirty environments where chrome moly not so much.

Check your piston skirts for chipping/scorching, make sure there is no play in the wrist pins. Have you rod bearing housings measured to make sure they are not out of round if they are they will have to be cut and re bored. Have your main bearings checked for out of round and line bore as needed. Replace all of your freeze plugs with brass freeze plugs. And have new cam bearings installed.

Have a good 3 angle valve job done with new stem seals. Also make sure the head is flat and the block is flat. I would throw in a new oil pump. Also if you are replacing the cam make sure you replace the distributor gear as well. You can also find re-man heads on eBay for around $280 may be a cheaper option depending on what your local machine shop wants to charge to re-man a head.

Comp Cams makes a good fuel injected cam/lifter/timing set kit for around $220. Sounds like a lot but all this will make sure you have a good end result and a rebuild that will last 100k plus. Hope this helps. Just take your time and dont rush and it will turn out great
