Default Engine?

So i've got an 86 so its carb'ed and is a V6 2.8L, with 31's. it is way under powered and get 10 miles to the gallon so i need a fix for this. I've heard that i could drop a chevy engine right in and it'd work, not that simple i know but from my understanding the transmission would bolt up to it. Is this true? if so what engine should i go with i'm in high school, but i can work on it a lot just not tons of money but as much power as possible. I want at least a V8, no use messing with this old 2.8L. But i like carb so i'd love to stick with one of thoughts throw some ideas at me please.
