I need a new engine. Any suggestions on where to get a new one? Rebuilt or used?

I just went through this about a year or so ago. I bought two junkyard engines before I got one that wasn't a POS. We ran them with starter fluid before we bought them, but they were still junk. I have a friend who has dropped JY engines into used Jeeps and trucks for years with great success. Unlucky me! The engine that was in my '95 XJ when I bought it had a hairline crack in the block. It would run okay for about thirty minutes and then overheat. The second engine had a flat cam lobe, or maybe a dinged valve. We never got it to run right. Third times' the charm, though. The 2008 engine that's in it now came out of a Wrangler I think. It runs good, starts good, no real problems. It runs a little hot in the summer, and overheats in summertime stop-and-go traffic, but it runs great the rest of the time.

If you can TRUST the engine rebuilder, that might be the way to go. We have a good rebuilder here in Houston called Thunderbolt. They sell a re-built '87-98 242 cu. in. I6 (the 4.0L) for $1095 with a $350 core charge. If I had it to do all over again, I believe I'd just buy a re-built 4.0L powerplant from a regular engine re-builder instead of rolling the dice on a used JY engine. But like I said, my buddy has good success with JY engines out of wrecks. (Just not this time, LOL.)
