electrical problem

electrical problem
I was driving home from work when my battery voltage gauge jumped up to 19volts and my gas gauge dropped to E. i tried tapping the gauge cluster and nothing moved so i shut it off to try and turn it back on. and after i shut it off, i lost all power to everything and when i turned the key, nothing at all happened. any ideas on what this could be?
