Default Electrical Issues?

First off, I just joined this website, and I've got to say (just browsing a few of the posts) that I'm going to be visiting very frequently! Everyone seems to be very helpful & knowledgeable!

I've had quite a few electrical issues in the 3 years I've owned my 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 6 cyl.

Just the other day, I tried starting my car only to have it not crank. Instead, the CD ejected from my CD player and all the doors locked/unlocked {which isn't a normal occurrence }

The only way I remedied it was to take off the negative wire on the battery, mess around with some of the fuses, and put it back on. When I tried to crank it then, it was able to start (still a bit rough, but got me from A to B).

My questions: What should my next steps be? Should I assume it's an electrical short somewhere? Does it have anything to do with possibly needing a tune up?

Any information/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry for the length of this post also!

Jamie

Jamie,

I would start by scanning for obd2 codes and see if there is anything hiding in there, if not you may want to look at going our to a salvage yard and trying a new ecu, a buddy had a jeep that would do some weird things out of no where and it turned out his ecu had corrosion on it and was shorting out. If all else fails try and start checking wireing with a multimeter. You didnt say if you had messed with the wiring lately, like putting in a stereo or anything, if you have you may want to retrace your steps and see if something didnt get hooked back up properly.
