Default electrical issue. need some help.

So my xj has been acting a little funny. If I let it sit for a long period of time and started it my voltage was rite were it needed to be, but if I drove it to the store and started it up my voltage would read low. The other day I was driving home and saw that it was almost dead so I pulled over and when I did it died and I couldn't get it to start. I decided to replace the battery and try to get it home. When I hooked up the new battery it fried the green and white striped wire that goes from the fuse box under the hood to the alternator and blew the 30a fuse in the front of the fuse box. I went to lkq and grabbed some new cables and wire and when I replaced it it did the same thing. I'm at a lose for what would make it do that and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what would cause this?

Exactly which fuse did it blow? If it holds with that fuse removed, whatever it powers is where I'd look first.
