Default Electrical & Ignition Switch Woes

So when I bought my Jeep I didn't notice the push button installed on the dash.... when I got home I pushed it without the key being in.... the starter cranked up! what???!!! the jeep didn't start which was good (probably no juice to the coil without the key in) but wtf! If I put the key in the on position and push the button, the car starts..... ok, a poorly conceived push button start "I thought." well the other day I tried to crank her the normal way with the key (which had been working) and nothing... then I remembered the button and it fired right up. backyard redundancy at its best? or just a poor solution to a problem? anyways, I definitely want to get rid of this button, (possibly make it work correctly as a push start - no power in key crank postion, and no power at button w/o key) but my question is..... is this common for our ignition switches to have these issues? I also have the: gauges sometimes go out, interior lights sometimes stay on, door locks don't always function properly problems, any connections? I just have to laugh at all this crap, it'd be too painful to freak out about it, but I'd like to fix everything the best I can "the right way" if there is such a thing (without replacing the entire vehicle's wiring harness)
