Having a problem with my XJ I was hoping some one could help me with. The previous owner had the problem where sometimes it would start and sometimes he couldn't hear the fuel pump kick on and it wouldn't start. It's only happened to me twice. But this morning it died twice and it died once Sunday night.
In troubleshooting I've found I can jumper the relay terminals and the pump will kick on so I know it's not bad. I also changed out the relay with a known working relay and it still wont kick on with the key. The connector at the pump is a three wire connector. Two of the wires are dead short to groung and the other only reads 6.5V. I've mix and matched all the relays in case there was one or more bad ones. I've checked all the terminations that I know to check.
If I jumper the relay and try to start it, it still wont start even with the fuel pump pumping fuel.
Now for my theory: there is something required for ignition that is also in the fuel pump circuit. Is this any where in the ball park? I'm not sure what could cause the fuel pump not to kick on with the key. My crappy haynes manual has the worse schematic I've ever seen so it isn't doing me any good. Thanks for any help
