OE standard cooling consists of the belt fan only. OE Heavy Duty cooling added the efan. Factory a/c also added HD cooling.

Nope, can't say that I have, just going by what the book says. Don't have enough time to look at other XJs, just our 1 XJ takes lots of time away from looking at other things, just to keep it going. LOL

You have an e-fan on the driver's side, and a mechanical/clutch fan on the passenger's side. Sounds like you want to remove the clutch fan and replace it, right? Having the same overheating problems as the majority of us had/have? Replace all of your cooling system components and flush/fill it. Problem solved 90% of the time.

If you see the belt driven fan and to the right an electric fan, well there is your HD cooling.

Heavy duty cooling (both fans) was available as an option without a/c, from what I've read.....got to be a rare bird though.

Does it/did it have factory a/c? If it does/did, it left the factory with HD cooling.

Correct. If the drivers side of your radiator is open you 're missing the electric fan. Look for a plug not plugged into anything in the ftont drivers corner. Go to a junkyard and get one. There are a couple of screws holding it on top and it just slides out (tabs on the bottom) .

The later model ones were a little quieter and more efficient but I think most of the 4.0 ones fit the same.

I got my plastic-ish radiator at advance auto. It works fine and the jeep runs a bit cooler. The tranny lines were a pain to attach (the couplings)
