Default electric cooling fan

Hi everyone.

I'm having some overheating issues with my 98 Cherokee sport, 4lt. I was just wondering if the electric fan is solely used when the a.c. is on or does it also kick in when the engine reaches a certain temp?

My Ac isn't working at the moment and I tested the fan by connecting it to the battery and it doesn't work.

If it's only connected to the a.c I won't worry about replacing it now but if it kicks in during other times I'll replace it.

Cheers

Paul

It should come on around 210 even without ac. Grab one from the junk yard

FSM says "fan on temp" is 218 coolant temp. Working a/c will engage the efan when the compressor engages. Unplugging the electrical connector at the t-stat cover should turn the efan on as a safety default and set a CEL.

Also, the fan clutch on the belt driven fan could be weak/bad.

If running hot in Vancouver, I'd suspect more cooling system issues than just the efan.

What temps are you seeing on the temp gauge (if you have one)?

How did you connect it to the battery? What pin cavity did you put + power to and what pin cavity did you jumper to ground?

If it's only connected to the a.c I won't worry about replacing it now but if it kicks in during other times I'll replace it.

Thanks! I'm in the interior of bc at the moment so it's been around 30 Celsius most days. It's only getting hot on the big climbs, it reached 230-235 once but otherwise is generally on 220 on the other climbs. It's running about 210 in general. Is this far from normal?

I knew my fan clutch was weak but my elec fan kept things under control until I could afford to do some work on the cooling system. It ran temps like yours. Since I finished working on it the majority of the time it's running 195*. When I pull a long grade it gets to 210* or just below. This is with the A/C on. Air temps have been upper 80's to mid 90's.

230-235 does seem a little toasty with no a/c and moderate ambient temps.
