Default Electric Compass not working

This is an issue I noticed a couple years ago but finally want to address it. One of three things will occur while driving my '95 XJ. Either
a) the compass will simply not turn on unless I hit the power button (driver side button)
b) the compass will not work when hitting the button but may or may not turn on on its own later
or c) will flash on and off at a very high frequency (~10 times/sec)

During any given drive, all three will usually occur at some point. The issue definitely seems electric in nature. Would like to see some circuits and determine if there is a loose/disconnected wire but don't see any screws above. Any suggestions?

I would check the connection of sender and wire harness. Unplug it and clean the contacts. Located behind front bumper, mounted below radiator.
Also, may need to be calibrated. Directions are in the owners manual, something about doing donuts (turning in a circle).

I know it's calibrated correctly and also I'm aware of the donut method for doing the calibration, but didn't know about the harness. Will have to take a look. Thanks.

I don't see where the harness is. Could you upload a pic from yours? Thanks.

Would like to still get this fixed but I can't locate the harness. Per the owners manual there is one under the bumper explained above, but that's for the temp sensor (which works fine when the display decides to turn on).
