Default Electric antenna removal?

The electric antenna on my 91 Cherokee Laredo is bent. I'd like to remove it for now and in the future replace it with a standard antenna. Also, the antenna is kind of in the way of the car cover I have over it to keep the tree sap/debris off of it. Short of just breaking it off is there a good way to remove for now?

Just cut it off. Or, if its not bent too bad, sometimes you can straighten them. For the car cover, you can add a grommet so the antenna can pass thru if wont go down, or if you have a solid antenna.

I'm guessing the power antennas don't come off the same as the standard ones? When I put a tarp over my parts Jeep I simply unscrewed the antenna, took about 30 seconds with a small adjustable wrench. Same story for when I painted my Jeep.

That's a good idea with the grommet. I'll consider it when I get the new antenna.

I haven't tried twisting it to see but I'm guessing it does not. The base of it looks completely different. I wish it were a standard antenna.

Does anybody know how the electric antenna retracts and goes down? Is is supposed to go down every time the key is turned off? It's been a long time since I've messed with the Jeep and honestly don't remember how or if the antenna retracted.

It only extends when the radio is turned on. On my 91 it stays retracted even when my stereo is playing a CD, then extends when I turn the stereo input to radio.
