So after fighting with my wee beastie over the last week I think I have traced my problem to the ECM, I am headed to the jy tomorrow to hunt out a replacement but can't seem to find out if these are transmission specific. Do I have to find one in a Cherokee with a manual transmission? Or am I going to get lucky for once? Also will the ECM out of a Comanche work as well?

I'm no authority. I might guess a Powertrain Control Module. (PCM) 91 to 95 might work. It may well be specific for the automatic, but my .02 is the Comanche will be OK. I don't know!
They are pretty hardy. Usually it's a sensor or a wiring problem. Have you tried;
OBD1 Models: 1991-1995
1) Start engine (if possible). Move transmission shift lever
through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on and then off
(if equipped).
2) Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn
ignition on, off, on, off and on within 5 seconds. Record 2-digit
fault codes as displayed by flashing MIL.
3) For example, fault code 23 is displayed as flash, flash,
4-second pause, flash, flash, flash. After a slightly longer pause,
other codes stored are displayed in numerical order. When MIL begins
to flash fault codes, it cannot be stopped. Start over if count is
lost. Code 55 indicates end of fault code display.
The codes can be found in "info threads", "sticky"on the main page. Also I hear the parts stores will read them free.

Ok I checked the error coded and what I got was the following:
33 & 52
I checked the error codes and according to the list they are as follows:
33 - Air conditioning clutch relay circuit open or shorted
52 - Oxygen sensor stuck at rich position
Could either one of these be responsible for my beastie to just die as I am driving down the road? It will run fine then just die, no shuddering or anything - the RPM just drops to 0 then I can't get it restarted unless I leave it sit for a while?
I checked all my vacuum lines and replaced a couple that where questionable, replaced the fuel pressure sensor, fuel filter and swapped out the fuel pump for a spare I had. I am at a loss here...
