Post Early low fuel light

So I was driving my Jeep yesterday and I noticed that my low fuel light came on even when I was no where near empty. I was just under a half a tank. What could this be? My fuel gauge is where it should be in
correspondence with my milage reading on the tripometer.
Just when I get everything working properly, something else goes crazy. LOL

Any help would be great.

Yeah I figured out that mine comes on when I have about 5-6 gallons left...kind of annoying. Very frightening when your about an hour from home with no money and thinking you're almost out.

Rust in the tank. Remove the sending unit and you will see..

Float arm could be bad. I had a Dodge Dakoda do that, guage was stuck at 1/2 tank and light would be on all the time.

So....... would it be tied into the sending unit or tied into the gauge? I can't see Chrysler installing a secondary wire to a totally separate system. I see it coming on with a position with the needle.

So being that my XJ is 19 years old I should just drop out the tank and clean. Probably new fuel pump and components while its out. CANT WAIT! LOL!
Should I go with a stock fuel pump or one with a little more umph? Ive got several mods and plan on going with a stroker in the future.
And thanks for the help.
