Unhappy E fan question

97 Xj- I'm a new jeep owner so keep that in mind when reading this.

My electrical fan typically only runs when I'm running air conditioning. It never runs otherwise. Today I unhooked the coolant temp sensor while the engine was running and the E fan came on. Is this correct?

Also, I broke the fan shroud taking it out. The jeeps engine was much hotter to the touch today. Is this attributed to not having the fan shroud?

Lastly, All my guages are not coming on. Any advice

1) your fan will kick on with A/C or when the engine is over 180 degrees i believe.

2) get a new shroud because yes it really does make a big difference.

3) gauges could be lots of things but first pull apart the dash and unplug the instrument cluster. Spray some contact cleaner on the plugs and maybe some electric grease. plug it back in and cycle the key for power. Its very simple to get to and you should only need a phillips screwdriver. also check for fuses that run to the gauges.

I just read in the pacific manual that the e fan only comes on when requesting airconditioning or when the temp is 220 or above. That probably explains why it never comes on. Thanks for the reply.

E-fan (auxiliary fan) comes on when the a/c compressor does and at around 217 -218 degrees. Also,as you found out, when you unplug the sensor.

You upgraded to pacific? Nice man right on....yeah the end fan doesn't come on as frequently as a lot of people think.
