The temp over here in NYC have began to rise and to ensure I'm ready for summer I went out and bought some r134a to recharge my system.
The gauge Includes showed I was a bit low on freon so I charged it up.
Whenever I have the a/c on the air is somewhat cold but the fan will click on and then click off. What's the issue? I've only had my xj for a couple months so I'm not sure if this is normal or.....
Help? Tried searching.

what are your head pressures? the compressor and fan will cycle, this is normal. if it is cycling excessively it could be over charged and kicking off on the high side, if it's under charged the low side will fall into a vacuum and it will kick off.

 

While recharging it had it on max air con with fan on full blast.
What do you mean head pressure?

Also while refilling it would show 35-45psi and then the compressor/EFAN would click on and it would drop then jump up when it clicked off.

 

depending on the elevation where your at, the low side head pressure (small fitting or blue) is 20-35psi although I find it cycles less and blows colder at 45psi. the high side pressure (large fitting or red) is 160-235psi, at my settings it will hit around 250-255 on a hot day. turn the AC system and engine off, let the pressures equalize. normally it will be around 100psi +10 with the system off. if your gauge is only hitting 45psi max when the compressor is not running the system is under charged, and going into a vacuum and kicking off.

 

My fan cycles like crazy with the ac on! Never been able to figure it out...

 

And this is why an untrained person should not mess with the A/C system. Those handy little recharge kits only tell you the low side pressure, you need to know what the high side pressure is as well, but if you don't even know what the readings mean you're just wasting time and money. A properly functioning A/C system does not need to be recharged every year, if the refridgerent is low it means you have a leak that needs to be repaired.
