E brake problem

E brake problem
Got home tonight and put the old XJ in park and put the e brake on and heard a really loud BAM!! from right next to me it sounded like. So I left the e brake engaged and put the jeep in drive and it rolled, so obviously the e brake was not working. I then disengaged the e brake and when I grabbed and put the lever down it felt lose and didn't "force" itself down like usuall. I then reengaged the e brake and everything was fine and dandy. I did this more then once with no problem. So what the heck happened? Thanks.
Oh and it's a stock 01 XJ sport 4.0 AW4.

did you check the cables? "loud bang" sounds like something broke and e-brakes are mechanical
