I have been getting a pretty decent wobble in the xj at around 50 mph and it just gets worse as I speed up. I took it in to get the front end check out and the guy comes back saying that everything is perfect and that its my tires dry rotting. Anyone ever heard of dry rotting tires causing a wobble. A few time the wobble was straight out dw if that helps.

 

how old are the tires?
if they are coming apart inside, they can throw the balance off



or he couldn't find the problem and wanted to sell some tires

 

Check the dot date on the tires I'll tell u what week of what year for example 2309- 23rd week of 2009

 

unless they had been sitting for sometime and flatspotted age shouldnt cause a viberation.

 

When I bought the jeep it had been sitting about a year. But its like the wobble is stronger in the front left than anywhere and the rear seems fine.

 

Jack up each corner, or get the Jeep on a rack. Rotate each tire by hand, looking for knots or bulging in the tread area.

If they all appear round, try having each one computer balanced. Be sure the tech knows you suspect a possible separation so he can be watching for that.

 

They probably won't balance them if there dry rotted I know we wouldn't at my work it's a safety hazard driving on those tires

 

Yes dry rot can throw the balance of a tire off. Happened to my tires. About a month later they started to delaminate. Don't wait for that to happen is my suggestion, but you should also look for discrepancies in the tire(s) in question.

 

Just buy new tires before the ones u have blow out on the streets

 

You could try swapping the fronts to the back, but if you know you have dry rot tires, you are going to be well served to replace them, regardless of whether they are root cause with your DW or not.

 

I swapped the tires earlier and that made a big difference. So far its really smooth. If they are dry rotted would the wobble probably come back? The guy just said the most likely are dry rotted. It's not really up to me to buy new ones it's really up to my dad and he only is willing to buy 2 new ones for front.

 

u are going to want to buy all four tires so they wear evenly or your going to be buying two more really soon

 

Thats what I keep trying to say but hes like I know everything shut up. And Im not sure that its not the alignment killing it. The tires obviously toe out when pointed straight but the mechanic guy check the alignment and said it was perfect.

 

just find some used 32s or something on craigslist that would cost the same amount as two new tires then your dad will be happy

 

Im always looking on there. The rims I got now had used 31s on them but they were too little tread for his liking so he had the guy take them off.
