Default Driving Cross Country

A couple of days ago i bought a 6 cylinder, 92 Cherokee with 171,000 miles on it. I live at the very top of Indiana, and in a couple months I'm moving to the Orlando Florida area to go to UTI. I was looking for something that had space for our stuff, my girlfriend 2 baby boys and my little dog. Also for something that i can rely on to tow my caddy on a uhaul trailer. I could have bought a pickup with a extended cab but i saw this jeep and had to have it. It has a hitch but its rusty as hell, and it has a couple of problems but i think I'm on to them. The engine and tranny sound and feel pretty good but i don't know exactly how previous owners maintained it. Obviously before i take her 1500 miles, and the fact that when you buy a used vehicle you should change all fluids ( at least i do) i intend on doing so. Is there anything i should do to prepare her for this trip? Iv heard there reliable was this a bad buy or do you think it has what it takes to pull my baby behind it across the US?

Caddy on a U-Haul may be too heavy for a unibody XJ to haul.

Was it a bad buy??????? I think this is the wrong place to ask that.
It's JEEP forum.
That being said no it wasn't a bad buy.

A Caddy on a fullsize Uhaul trailer with a Jeep rated at 5,500 tow?
To heavy for that long a trip. (Honestly you don't "know" your new Jeep yet and what it can still handle.)

So what's the Caddy rated for?
Put the Jeep on the trailer and use the Caddy as a tow rig.

4th digit - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)Dup to 3,000 lbs.E3,001 - 4,000 lbs.F4,001 - 5,000 lbs.G5,001 - 6,000 lbs.H6,001 - 7,000 lbs.J7,001 - 8,000 lbs.

Does this better describe the reasons not to tow your Caddy with the Cherokee.

Especially when you add in people and cargo to move across the country.....I too would be concerned. Not that it couldn't do it....just that it would be a lot on the Jeep, plus the safety factor.

I recently towed a trailer a little heavier than the one in that picture with a 700 lb mower and 300-400 lbs of other junk with my stock XJ. I'm gonna guess the trailer itself was almost 1500 lbs, so approx. 2500 lbs total weight with about 200 lbs tongue weight. I'm telling you what, that 2500 lbs is about all my XJ wanted. Not so much that it didn't have enought power to pull it, but OH CRAP don't trail anyone too closely...brakes are not up to par for that kind of work. Need trailer brakes!

I was recently told they are strict also.

Hasn't been a worry though as I got a car dolly a few years ago.
They try to rent you the big trailer all the time and I doubt they'd let you put even the Cherokee on a dolly.
The pain is having to hide the thing to stop people from trying to steal it or keep asking if I wanna sell it.

Not real sure, but thought it was either a Toyota or a Mitsubishi may be a Isusu.

I'm pretty sure its a Nissan Patrol. Great off road trucks, a bit big though.

I don't like to be one to argue and take things way off topic but I'm pretty sure it is a Nissan Patrol:

Link

The lights on the Land Cruiser are a bit different and the gas tank flap is on the wrong side. The Nissan Patrol is specifically Euro-spec. They are very popular in Austrailia, New Zealand and Northern Europe. I don't think they were ever made for the US.

Once again sorry that this is way off topic. Mods can delete if needed.
