What is the name of the part/parts where the driveshaft enters the transmission on a 2wd xj? I've got some play there and it's not the u joint or transmission mount. A little help would be helpful to get me going in right direction. Thanks

Hey, freeworld. That would be the output shaft housing,well, according to some manufacturers anyway. There is a bronze bushing inside of the housing that surrounds the driveshaft when it's in there. A small amount of play is normal the driveshaft has to be able to spin in there. It's very common for the bushing to wear to much and cause vibrations or seal leakage. Now for the tough part. You're gonna have to find someone that knows what they're doing to get a replacement. My suggestions would be finding a transmission parts supply store or even just a shop specializing in transmission repair. They'll will know where to get one. The replacing it part isn't really difficult assuming the housing unbolts from the rear of the transmission. If the housing doesn't unbolt the replacement will require a special bushing remover and installer. Hope this helps. Good luck.
How much is too much play? No leaking but you can visibly see and feel movement. Thanks for reply, I believe it's the sealed type like you mentioned.
Do you have a dial indicator? Also you will get more movement the further out the slip yoke is. Are you trying to diagnose a vibration?
I would say more than 0.005-0.010" is cause for concern.

I don't have a dial indicator. I've got noise coming from the drive shaft area So starting with the obvious. I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow Because I'm kinda guessing what these parts are called. Originally Posted by kstopp

Its where the driveshaft goes into the transmission. I think this is the outputshaft ? I'm not mechanic but I wouldn't think there should be any play there. There's no play in U joint by the way.

The end of the driveshaft that slips in and out on the splines of the transmission output shaft is called the slip yoke. A bronze bushing supports the outside diameter of the slip yoke in the end of the transmission.
You would try to indicate something like this, and move the yoke and record how much movement there is:

i appreciate your response. It makes highway noise whenever my gas foot is on. I'm starting with this loose area as it seems obvious. I'm going to see if I can't rent a dial indicator like you've shown. Im also going to change motor mount soon. Know I've got one broken.
