Default Driver's door switch panel illuminated?

I have a 96 XJ Country and wondered if the driver's door switch panel for windows and door locks is supposed to be illuminated? I have a heck of a time in the dark finding the darn thing. Only way I can is to switch on the overhead cabin lights.

Nope no illumination could always install small led light like for alarms and wire into dash light fuse.

Wonder if anyone has ever fished a light behind the panel to see if it would shine through?
