Driver window auto roll down
Two random questions here about something that has been bugging me.
I have test driven about 10 different 97-01 xjs prior to buying mine, and every single one of the driver windows made a grinding noise when it is all the way up or down and you still have your finger on the switch. Why?
And why does the button say "auto" as if you press it and it will roll all the way up or down like some vehicles do without needing to hold your finger on the switch?
This has been really bugging me.

mine does the grinding noise also, from what i understand its a bad regulator not telling the motor to stop when its all the way. but im not 100% sure and it hasnt bugged me enough to fix it.
and yes, the auto means it will roll down automatically if it you just tap it for a brief second, or at least it should. only auto down though, not up.

Its the actual gear and worm gear of the track that gets worn out and since where it stops in both positions that's the wear point, causing the worm gear to move farther away till its not longer catching eachother in that direction. I took apart a pass gear that was good and replaced it. It will eventually start up again, only real fix is the whole assembly.

My drivers side has been making that noise since I bought it back in '09. The passenger side gave out about a year after I bought it. All it cost was the price of a cotter pin & about a hour of your time.
4 years & going strong. I only used one cotter pin he recommends 2.

Thank you so much big david this is why i love forums and particularly this one. Its a stupid small annoyance but when you add them all up and fix all the little things it makes the jeep that more enjoyable.

My driver's side window goes up faster and makes a different sound from all the other ones. I think the assembly was replaced at some point prior to my ownership.
And the auto switch is there to do just what you described. Mine works, just have to click the button back the whole way. I'm not fond of the feature personally.
