Default Driver Side Door

Hello to all! I have been a long time reader of these forums and have finally decided to join! I also recently purchased my first jeep! It's a 2000 jeep Cherokee XJ and I must say I couldn't be happier however there a few small little things that I would like to address and first and foremost is my darn driver side door that sounds like an old barn door when I open that sucker and it's embaressing when I pull up somewhere and have to open and close my door. I noticed that it looks like someone jimmy rigged the door pin because the pin doesn't look anything like the other (3) pins it almost sounds like a popping sound when you open and close the door. Could this be caused by the pin being undersized in diameter? I tried oiling the hinges on the door and no luck? Can someone please guide me in the right direction? If I just purchase the correct size pin will that fix my problem?

Yours is probably the same as my older Jeeps, but I'm not sure. Mine are a hollow pin made with a role of steel, with a seam, 7mm. I didn't have access to a 7mm anything so I drilled the holes out to 5/16 and cut the smooth section of a long hex bolt to fit. It will outlast the hinge and the Jeep.

I think I used a drill bit extension from my carpenters tools, as well as an angle drill (Up on the bottom one?) to get at it.

I think the new pin was 5/16 ths but you get my drift.

Sometimes I use spray chain and cable lube. With that range you can get lock and window stuff inside the door also. Wipe it later. Hope that helps, there IS more....

Yeah I am going to head over to the auto parts store here soon and see if I can get the correct size pin. Thanks for your help.

I just happen to be a machinist so I was able to turn a hinge pin on the lathe last night so I think that should fix my problem ..... At least I hope so! Can aniyone tell me where the zirk fittings are located on a 2000 jeep Cherokee XJ? Also I have this other little problem whenever I turn on my a/c or even the heat the jeep seems to idle a little funny for some reason. It will idle high and then low and then high and low and so forth even when it's in park! Is this a common problem that I am over reacting too or is there something wrong? Thanks for all the great help.

Turning on the AC turns on the cooling fan, the rest I do not know. Also the Jeep will periodically engage the AC pulley clutch to help keep the seals and works working, I think. Thc computer, which they call the Power Control Modjewel (or guacamole, with my spell check), may bump up idle with AC, again I don't know for sure. Or was it 8 mm?

The pin is called a check pin(255012900AB) Mopar number. You can also find them at Oreilly's in the help section. It is also possible that the door check is going bad(255235571AB).

So what are you saying something may need replaced? Is this a common thing with jeeps? This is my first jeep also I turned a pin on the lathe last night at work and it seems to be working fine. Door aligns perfectly

I just did mine 2 weeks ago. I just went under and looked for them. Should be in some book somewhere. There are more than a few, don't care to try to list them myself. Was it 7mm?

That's stock. My 98 does that. Just go doorless and don't worry about it anymore

Well I am almost positive the owner before me never added grease to those zerk fittings. I have been noticing lately when I make a really hard turn it's a little squeaky not real bad just a little irritating. I found a zerk fitting diagram however that's for 1984-1998 did they change anything from 98 - 00? I guess my question here is how many are there? Where are they located? Do I have to use special grease or will any grease do the job? Thanks for all the help!

Yeah I have this issue as well however I only noticed it when it's in park or I am backing into a parking spot. I wonder if this is normal? I thought maybe something was wrong. Maybe someone else can chime in.
