Driveline Slop
Hey guys,
My 95 XJ has always had a little drive line slop in the rear driveshaft but I guess I am just noticing it more. I can grab the driveshaft and turn it slighty both ways when in park. I cant tell if its the rear end or t-case or both. I really notice it when Im driving, when I let off the throttle real fast, there is a really defined "thump" from the rear. Anyway, is there an easy solution to this what seems to be a fairly common problem?? I have an NP242 T-case and a LS equipped D35 if it matters.
Thanks in advance!!

i'd say start by greasing everything. the ds itself, and if your ujoints have zerk fittings hit them with some grease too, sounds simple I know, but sometimes it helps. see how it reacts, then maybe try changing the ujoints that are bad.

Yeah I regularly grease my drive train. Does anyone know if there are things that loosen in the rear diff yoke or output shaft on T-case??

Mine has a good amount of slop, I also have a 242 transfer case. I just figured it normal? Goes down the road fine though so, no harm, no foul

my driveshaft used to wiggle around a little bit if i was to grab the driveshaft and try to wiggle it right before it goes into the rear end...good fitting new u joints fixed the problem.

IMO, its most likley just the backlash on the ring and pinion in the rear end, If your u-joints are good. If you are worried about it you could take the rear cover off and check the mesh on the gears.
