Drive shaft question

I need to replace the ujoints on my rear driveshaft. Can I do it by hand or do I need to have them pressed?? My dad is telling me they need to be "pressed" in but my friend did his by hand on his grand cherokee.

needle nose plyers and a small flat tip screwdriver, to remove the lock rings. a 18 or 19 mm socket and a dead blow or sledge hammer to knock the caps out and in.
