Like I always say "Learn something new every day".

Thanks for the key photos and the details and for the rude AZZ poster dude I hope you don't have to ask many questions like I do.

Yes but its possible that he has an aftermarket key that might not look like either one. But yes, if his key looks that one in your other post then is chipped for sure.

Even if it is an aftermarket key, the body of the key will be fat if it has the transponder in it.

Question?
I have the key described at SKIMM Key. What exactly does the transponder do?

I have a couple extra keys but I have never tried driving with anything but the official key.

If you're familiar with near-field communications like PayWave, PayPass, SpeedPass, etc, they basically work the same. The SKIM in the Jeep has an antenna in the steering column that reads a secret ID off of the transpoder in the key body, then tells the PCM it's allowed to start. Theoretically you could just tape a Sentry Key to the steering column and use a normal steel copy to turn the ignition switch.

Interesting.

GM used a similar system called VATS back in the day, which passed voltage through a resistor in the key. If the right voltage was returned, it sent a modulated signal to the computer to fire the injectors. Otherwise, you could crank all day with no result. A four-minute lockout between attempts deterred theft very well, and the timer would reset if you tried again too soon, even with the right key.

It was a ***** to bypass in my Camaro when I lost my keys

Thanks for all the advice guys! I took a pic of the key fob, I got it as a present for being in a wedding. You can see the XJ key is just a hair too long to fit into it...that's why I started this thread.

I'm going to try and get a cheap key made this weekend and drill a hole in that to see if it fits. Genius, I had never thought of that!

that key doesn't have a chip, I start mine with the hardware store key, and have a different switch from the parts store there's no electronic **** in xjs for keys.
