Default The dreaded 0331 cracked head

Why would a cracked head (0331) not eat coolant onnthe highway? Speeds ranged from 40 to 70mph.

How hot or how cold was it when you were on the highway?

Cold(ish) weather. 2 degrees C or about 35F. Temp gauge stayed dead center.

I think a better question is why are you driving it with a cracked head?

Because we didn't know where the coolant leak actually was. Rad, water pump, and thermostat were all replaced, as well as a couple heater core flushes. We only figured out the head is cracked after finding the forums here, and then I started looking for the crack, and used the methods prescribed by members here. 25k miles or 40k kms with a cracked head, lol.

Ah, OK. Gotcha. So, during that 25K miles, you weren't loosing coolant while running at highway speeds, but you were otherwise?

Nah, losing coolant all the time mostly, but the most recent highway trip (Mom's vehicle, travels back and forth about 180 miles between home and her mom's place regularly as she is 1 of 2 caregivers for her mom) we had traveled 125 miles with no coolant loss. Today, at trip completion, and vehicle sitting overnight, about a quart was gone. After highway trip completed, it was driven 20(ish) miles in city.

Glad you have a sense of humor! Have you physically checked and looked to see if there is a crack in the common area?

Looked, didn't see one but found a lil milkshake on the oil cap today. When I looked initially I saw a good 6 dots of green under the valve cover though. Leak down test being performed today, maybe tomorrow.
