One thing to remember, if the drain hole is in the cover, the hole is higher than the bottom of the diff case......crud/water will accumulate and won't drain because it's lower than the drain hole. Removing the cover allows all to drain, then wipe the last bit out at the bottom with a rag.

Excellent point! I guess I'm back to carrying a spare gasket along with the diff lube.
