Default Down grading from a Peugeot to a BW T-5???

New to the world of the Cherokee and was doing a little research. The Peugeot tranny in this has 200 + miles on it. I'm reading that if it breaks parts are very expensive.

I have a line on a 84 Cherokee for almost nothing. If it has a T-5 do you think its worth going backwards a few years and swapping it out?

If I decided to do that will it even fit??? Has this ever been successfully attempted?

Inquiring minds want to know.

T-5 is a pretty tough tranny.
I'm not sure the Peugot tranny was a "step up" as much as it may have been cheaper for Chrysler to get a hold of or be lighter with less internal losses to help with milage ratings...

Just my rambeling thoughts.

Thats what I was thinking but will a T-5 fit in an 88 Cherokee ( hoping direct replacement with a used transfer case and bell housing)

Or will it be a giant pain in the butt and cost more than the jeep is worth?

I'm sorry I do not know the answer as to fitment...
I cannot image Jeep would have altered the unibody transmission tunnel...
If it fit in the early years... ??

Good luck.
