Door Hinge Pins
Hi guys, I have a 1998 jeep Cherokee xj 2 door and the drivers side hinge pins are worn out so im currently replacing them. Does anyone know the best way to remove the stock hinge pins? the heads are welded in place so i was wondering if i need to grind the heads off and tap the pin out or what.
Also my rear hatch is rattling like a SOB everytime i hit the slightest bump, does anyone know how to fix this problem? thanks guys

I had crap hinges on my 94 & hard to grind them off. Is there an easier way IDK.
As for the rear hatch, hows your seal? May just need to replace it. Quick, relatively cheap fix is generic weather stripping.

Changing pins is not to hard of a job. Should be less than 2 hours. You will need a dremel tool.
Open door with the door hold pin removed.
Support the door with a floor jack or stack of lumber.
Grind off the plastic cover exposing the door pin.
In the middle of the pin grind it in half. This will take a few minutes.
With a hammer and punch knock out the pin that was ground in half.
Remove the old pieces of pin and steel bushing.
Remove the 3 torx bolts that hold the door side of the hinge on.
The lower bushing goes on the bottom of the body mounted hinge half.
The upper bushing goes on the top of the body mounted hinge half.
Hold them in place with some grease.
Slide the pin into the top of the door side than the body side not forgetting the plastic bushing which you filled with grease.
Tap it into place and install the E clip
Reinstall the 3 torx bolts and adjust the door in and out.
The door side hinge on the last one I did needed to be filled a slight amount to get the pin to seat completely.

Getting them out can be difficult, since they're going to have stress on them from the door check.
As far as replacements - I know the earlier pins are 1/4", and I just used hitch pins to replace the roll pins. They were easier to put in, will be easier to take out (to replace the door check,) and are commonly available.
Hitch pins can be had with springloaded ***** to retain them, which will require less room than hitch pins using hairpins or Cotter pins to retain them. Check your local hardware store.

Similar question I think?
Hi there, I have a similar question dealing with the door. There is a rod of some sort that connects the door and the body for tension when opening and closing the door, and it has a pin in it. That pin is loose, like it's missing a washer or something; so it makes a loud "snap, snap" when you open or close the door. I want to replace it, but have no idea what to call it?

Nevermind, from looking closer at the forums, it seems to be called a check arm pin.. ordered a new pin from Quadratec and will give it a go when it arrives, wish me luck! thanks!

Get these.

But the hinge could be bad also. Pull one from a pick and pull.

Ha! Everyone here is talking about how long it takes to take out the pins. Well, my passenger door's pin fell out all by itself about a month ago (all I did was open the door to get groceries out.) Luckily it fell on a clean cement surface so I found it right away. I wasn't sure what it was at first. Then when I realized what it was, I stuck it back in. Seemed okay until last night when I gave a friend a ride home. When she opened the door to get out I heard this "PING!" and knew immediately it was that pin. But this time I couldn't find it as it was on gravel and standing muddy water. Now I need to buy one. Dang!
