Exclamation Door Chime Driving Me Insane!

Whenever i have the door open the door chime in my 1999 xj is driving me insane. Sometimes i need the door open when im working and listening to radio etc. I dont want instructions on how to pull the fuse, take out the door clip, or anything else i just want to shut the chime off. I have search high and low on google etc and every way to do it i have found disables lights when the door is opened or disables some other feature.. How can i get rid of this obnoxious sound without disabling anything else on the xj?

from some other posts I've read, the chime itself is a black cylinder on the back of the instrument panel on 97+

You probably have to pull the whole dash to get to it.

All while is it madly chiming.

If i remove the cylinder, could that possibly cause problems elsewhere? Nobody seems to do it this way so im wondering if thats why..

Pull the bottom cover off the steering column and unplug the single wire with the green plug. It should be on the back of the key cyl. All other warning systems will work as they should. I have done this on some 98's so give it a try.

Or you could roll down the window, close the door?

Why should i work around an annoyance and inconvenience? Posts like this are really unnecessary and are just spam. I specifically said in the OP I'm not looking for work arounds. Thanks a lot to nowhereman98 i will give this a try tomorrow. If it works out, i will pass it along to the many other people I've seen asking this question. Much thanks!

After removal, I hope he doesn't lock his keys in it or leave the headlights on.

For the 1996 it's much easier. The chime is plugged into the fuse panel above driver side kick-panel.

Why cant you just put a piece of tape over the button thing beside the door hinge that sets off the chime while your door is open and your working on it then take it off when done? No need to remove instrument panel or dash.

I find that on my 2000 if you leave the lights on it won't let you lock the door unless you do it manually. So if he removes the chime and forgets the lights when he hits the lock button it just won't do anything till you turn the lights off.

That is assuming he has power locks.
