Front vs. rear door maybe?

Might wanna try a junkyard or buying elsewhere. The issue isnt the plastic trim getting crunched, when the door swings wide open it puts a lot of stress on the hinges. On the body side they're welded to really thin sheet metal. Replacement is no fun

I swap the broken ones on my wife's 2000 with some I took from an 89, same principle on both were very similar, however the rod lenght was different, and with different stop points, so I just swap the rod from the old piece to the new one, grease it up and all good!

just letting it swing is a bad idea. the door hinges are welded and poorly I might add. if the door swings to full extension repeatedly it can start to tear the hinge away from the body affecting the door alignment and seal in relation to the aperture. Much more difficult and expensive than replacing a door check.

The newer versions (unsure of the years, the ones with the rubber cushion) work in older XJ's that didn't have that cushion. Should be a direct fit in place of the old one.

I have a 2000 door check on my 88 MJ it stops the door before the hinge binds. The original allowed the hinge to bind before it actually reached full extension, thus putting excess stress on the weld mount ... simple case of poorly thought execution.
Got mine off eBay for $30.
Later models have the rubber bumper and should be the check of choice IMO when replacing them.

does anyone have suggestions for getting the door check off a junkyard jeep. i was able to get the door side off but i couldnt get the other side due to the pin not allowing me to fit a ratchet in there.

Phillips #2 screwdriver and a hammer to tap the pin upwards worked great for me

A guy in the local club needed one for his 2001 and I had an extra that I'd pulled for my 91, he says it worked fine

That's great until your door swings open hard, bends your hinge mounting points on the post.

Ask me how I know this can happen.

Pocket a part places are normally full of xj's.

The body side is the same for all years, the door side is what changed over the years, the 97+ being the better check of choice.
The body side bracket is exactly the same between my 88 and my 00, and the 92 parts XJ in my driveway.
