Dome light in rear not working when back hatch is opened.
I have a 99 jeep Cherokee. When I open my rear hatch I think the dome light should come on. The bulb is good, because it comes on when I open any other door, but the dome light does not come on when the rear hatch is opened. I'm not sure if there are some broken wires or what...

May sound stupid, but did you push the light up? It clicks in and out so you can open the hatch without the light coming on.

Need to check the wiring harness going into the hatch. You will probably have to remove the interior trim at the liftgate and roof, and maybe some off the lift gate. There are several wires that run through there and they are prone to breaking.
violet/yellow, tan/black, black those are the wires you really need to check.

Mine melted a little bit too. The plastic coated the metal probes and broke the electrical contact. I cleaned the connections with a small screwdriver and it all worked again. Just pull the assembly out and check the wiring first to make sure you have power and then clean up all the connectors. Let us know what you find.

Try turning on your interior courtesy lights at the headlight switch.
If the dome lamps are good, and the rear switch is enabled, they will both come on.
The switch on the rear lamp will turn it off independently of the front lamp.
The lamp goes off if the tailgate is closed. The tailgate striker and latch serve as the turnoff switch when they contact.
