Default dome light issue

hello everyone

i have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee, 4l 6 cylinder 2wd

today yeah i know florida don't get cold but it was like 25 degree's colder (it was about 45degree's) when i went to work the prior day it was almost 70 when i went to work in the early morning.

well today after i started the jeep the domes lights came on and would not shut off.

i opened and shut each door and the back hatch but the light would not turn off.

i did check it about 30mins after going to work and the lights was off so its still turning off on its own after a short bit.

while driving the lights woudl not go off they woudl flicker off and on here and there but kept coming back on.

when i got home this morning i disconnected each switch on each of the doors but even with all of them disconnected(second issue on this later) the lights was on.

so its not one of those switches or it would have turn off eventually.

now after being home for over an hour the lights are still on so the thing that turns them off isn't even doing it now.

any idea's on what to do next?

probably goign to disconnect the battery now to avoid draining it.

also and this might be stupid but the front door censors are very tight to get on and off. on the drivers side after i disconnected the censor the cable went back into the frame. for the life of me i can't figure out how to get that plastic off. there was no screws on it so the only thing i can think of now is the bolt that holds the seat belt on must keep it on too, can anyone confirm this?

thanks

ryan

what would it be in the rear latch that would cause this. it opens just fine and locks and unlocks just fine with the buttons.

i just don't understand the reasoning for it being the rear latch.

but here's something that might shed more light on it or confirm what you said.

when the vehicle is started and running or when i shut it off and the lights are one. in this case i want to locked it up. if i get out and unlock the doors and open the rear window portion. then lock the doors, the lights stay on but if i hit the back dome light as if to switch on then hit it again all the lights go out and i can close the rear window and the vehicle is locked and the lights are off.

so i am not sure if that confirms what you said or points to another issue.

i hope others can confirm as well or explain why its the latch thats doing it etc.

thanks for the reply by the way.

hello

i assume this is showing me what i was asking but to be honest its beyond what i know.

if i am correct and based on what i read elsewhere the rear hatch is what keeps the circuit open which makes the lights off but its malfunctioning so its closing the circuit causing the lights to stay on.

i am going to ask one more question at the moment.

i am going to assume its the hatch as stated.

could someone post a picture or link to the part i need to replace?

then i can determine if its something i can do or not and make sure i get the right part.

thanks guys for your help.

Does the headlight switch in the grand cherokee rotate to turn the interior lights on and off? Did you check this already?

no the headlight switch does not rotate to turn on the dome lights.

i have a sliding switch that brighten and dims the panel and turns on the dome lights.

oddly enough after the cold weather (well floridians call it cold) kinda normalized the problem went away.

now all i have to do is find a needle nose pliers to get to the door sensor cables so i can reconnect the two front door sensors.
