Default Does your A/C work?

My A/C does not work and I found a leak using an electronic "sniffer" at the connection near the firewall where the lines go to the evaporator behind the wall. Could be the evaporator or the seal washers near the accumulator tank , or both. I am in no hurry to fix it , but I do find it somewhat interesting how many Cherokee jeeps I see going down the road with all windows open on a hot afternoon here in Arizona.

There must be a problem area in the Jeeps A / C system.
Do you know of any particular part of the A/C system that has a well known reputation for failure? I work outdoors in the heat all day in 100f or higher and don't mind driving in it. The family daily driver has 100K miles and it 7 years old and no A/C problems. It's an Intrepid .

Mine is the same way. If I fill it it works for about a month then it fades away. I would love to know what needs to be replaced.

My AC compressor clutch bearings went out last week. I just put on a new compressor. Still need to put on a dryer and charge up the system. I was in a hurry to go out of town and just had time to install the compressor to be able to get on the road and avoid having my serpentine belt break on the way. I still have the electrical disconnected until I get it done. It's 30 degrees and sleeting right now, so I will probably get it done first of the week.

My 94 works for a few days after I charge it then stops blowing cold. The compressor still kicks on and stays on but its just not too cold so I'm gonna throw stop leak in there next time it gets warm here in NJ...Tj

yes my AC works

and you can replace the O rings on all the connections that is the likely place its leaking

look for an oily residue at the connections that is a sign of a leak

I am not to sure about the method used to help reduce a leak in the Air Conditioning system. I have always been told to use dye only as a last ditch effort to find the leak. Otherwise , just use the electronic leak detector and find the source of the leak and fix it. Stop leak additives can do more harm than good. Be careful. I have heard horror stories from A/C techs opening systems up with several attempts made using this stuff. I have heard it can aid in the restriction of Orifice tubes and even the needle and seat of the Expansion Vale , if so equipped.

I do have a small trace of oil in the connectors near the firewall. That is where my sniffer goes crazy and makes a constant loud sound . No beeps.

I guess I need a special tool to remove the connectors?

you can get the tool at the parts house and new O rings
its a simple fix but you will need to recharge the system

I hear that !!! It's practically impossible to sell a car in Metro Phoenix if the A/C is out.

Thanks for the link and advice , I am just doing some homework on this and then when I feel like I have enough info , I'll get to work on this. I just want to be sure that the Evaporator core is not leaking. I heard that if I can access the condensate drain , I can confirm the leak there with the sniffer. If it goes to a constant tone there . OH , BOY. That is time consuming , I'm sure.

Oh , and for those that are about to tackle the same task , here is a nice site that I found . I think this is a must have tool for a Jeep owner. This just might be cake after all.
