Default Do you think this is why? Overheating

Hello, My name is Austin and I have a question. I am new here and I need to solve my first problem.

My Jeep does not have the secondary electric fan on the radiator. I have been noticing that the temperature is getting really hot and then after I park it it starts to spit all the coolant everywhere and that obviously is not a good thing.
Plus I can here the waterpump and the t-stat almost "bubbling" or boiling is what I think. Pretty sure that there is a small leak in the hose but there has to be something more or even just that fan.
Help?

Sounds like your Jeep needs some much needed cooling system TLC. At <$250 in parts, including a new rad, the XJ has one of the cheapest to replace cooling systems out there and not at all difficult to DIY. FWIW, XJ's with standard cooling (rare) did not have an electric fan, just the belt driven fan. If u have/use a/c, u need the efan.

Agree with the above. Replacing my rad and tstat tomorrow morning. If you are getting what appears to be a leak from your bottom radiator hose its possible it is from the weep hole on your water pump. This is a built in indication the pump is due for replacement. It also would explain the overheating.

Welcome to the forum. If you give us your year and model and engine type, we will talk you through it.

Oh my gosh thanks guys! Sorry I forgot to put the year and model in there. Was in second day of college classes and somehow assumed you all knew what it was lmao

But I have a 1996 Cherokee Sport. I didnt know about the weep hole in the water pump. It only does that when it gets super hot and yes it seems to look like it comes from the lower rad hose. Hmmmm.

Did it not come with the secondary electric fan or was it just removed. Even my 84 2.5 had the aux fan

Welcome to the board you have came to the right place and people to help you. Lots of information here if you search for it also.

For starters do a completes cooling system update flush and clean before starting them first, make sure heater core is open also. The radiator/water pump/fan clutch/thermostat with housing/hoses all need to be replaced and at AutoZone are very reasonable the radiator is only a $100.

Then I would suggest if your XJ did "NOT" come with an Elec Fan to go to a pull a part and find all the parts you need to do it they are a must for a good cooling system. If all the wiring and switches are there for the fan you just need to add one.

Its got the spot for it and it has the plug. Plus I have working A/C so I assume it needs it and was just never put back in when the motor was rebuilt.

Strange -- never heard of this. My '85 2.5 with A/C didn't have an aux E-fan and it had not been removed because I bought it new.

You're in Las Vegas, with working A/C, and no electric fan? It can't help but run hot.

Put one of those back in first them see how it does before throwing cooling system parts and money at it that may not need to be replaced.

If it has factory a/c, it came with 2 fans, 1 efan and 1 belt driven fan. No factory a/c (rare), no efan. Two fans is heavy duty cooling, one fan is standard cooling. All factory a/c equipped XJs had heavy duty cooling (2 fans) when they left the factory.

Soooo today she only got hot at idle and I dont even use the A/C cause I have all the windows down. And then when I start going again she will come back down the half gauge. Weird. Gonna look at that fan price and see what that does.
I can tell you this. When ever I am doing any sort of off roading its hot. No matter the speed. But once you get back on the roads it cools back down. That cant only be a fan.

Check the mechanical fan clutch.
