Do i really need a heater control valve?
Is that thing really necessary? What would happen if I just put in a manual on/off valve, and opened it during winter and closed it during summer...or just leave it open all year round? Would it affect my ac cooling temperature?

'97 up don't have a heater control valve. If the flow is shut off to the heater core, coolant sits there and stagnates, crud forms, so a plug could form as well. My guess is that's why the factory eliminated it on '97 up.
