Do I need new tires...?

have you tried ROTATING your tires? See if that changes anything. You can set toe yourself with a tape measure. I just got some DW after I installed my new lift springs. I adjusted the tow and it helped a LOT. But it was still shaking at about 45-52. I ahve needed to rotate tires any ways did that about 20 mins ago. Took it out for a drive, and DW no longer exists in my XJ!
My TRE's are worn. So I will be getting the ironman4x4fab tierod to replace so I can use bigger/better TRE's
So, I would say if after rotation and it goes away. Then maybe have your tires balanced. Or replaced if you have the money to do it now.

I agree the tires look like they are close enuff that you wouldnt want to spend money balancing.

I would agree on the tires being low on tread, and tire do have layers.... tread, secondary, cords/belts and inner wall of rubber. thats why tires have a ply rating.. 4 ply, 6 ply, 8 ply... thats the number of structural layers. just fyi....

we also can't see the inside of the tires. they could be worn down at an angle on the inside edge that we cant see. i wouldn't call complete BS on the shop. I would run them into the ground and then buy some but thats just me.

but this shake you get. is it after hitting a bump? is it in the body/floorboards? or in the steering wheel? is it speed related only? under load out of load?

If you are going to run them much longer go get them balanced. Nothing wrong with spending a little cash on your safety. I had a terrible shake at 50-55 and braking between 50 -55 was a nightmare. Had them balanced and the problem was gone. Its not a waste and you can find plenty of shops that wont kill you on the price.

I do not have money for tires right now so should I go ahead and balance them? I looked out the window today at front tire while it car was shaking and the tire was wobbling like it was loose but its on there tight. The whole jeep shakes including steering wheel it does not feel like I am going to die just does not feel good like tires going to fall of...

Check it out the older they get the more chance of belt seperation and if this happens you will get finder or quarter panel damage with those tires.
you cant run super swampers till their bald completely? I didn't know that. i did that on my last set alll the wayy to the belt then i replaced them.

Its dangerous for you to drive like that. You need to get them balanced. I would probably run them a little while longer, maybe 6 months so the $40 you would spend on balancing them is worth it.

U can run any tire 'til the belts show.....why replace 'em then, run 'em 'til they won't hold air anymore.......as long as u r offroad. On public roads, it's against the law, something to do with safety.

Yes and no, tires are curred in a mold but actually "made" of layers. Each layer using a different compound of rubber and each serving a different purpose.


As far as whether or not you need new tires. As most have said if your wear bar indicator is solid across the entire width of the tire in any one spot then it would probably be a good time to replace as this is the legal amount of tread depth you are allowed to run with. On a second note for your vibrations a broken or separated belt can cause this and to check look for any larger bulges on the sidewall of the tire.
