Do I need new tires...?
So I have a pretty good shake going on at about 40 mph...read up on DW and then went to Big 10 Tires to see how much it would be to get tires balanced. The guy said I am into my second layer of rubber and he would recommend me buy new tires instead of wasting money getting balanced.

those tires look only 1/4 worn keep them. look at all front suspention and bushings any play is not good, torn bushings are no good. go to another place and have them balance the tires (tires are made in one mold not layers). do have the tires ballanced and the alignment checked.

those tires look fine, is the front end aligned? balancing doesn't cost that much, go to a no name shop, i have 5 around here that do any size tire for 15 bucks for all 4 tires. i had those same tires, they road pretty good till about 20k miles, then were a little rough but u said a pretty good shake so. i'd check alignment, get them balanced. how much lift do you have?

i have never heard of anyone saying "you're into your second layer of rubber". if that was the case tires would grip terrible when almost out of the first layer then the next layer comes and their great. lol that guy has no idea about tires

sounds like he was trying to get you to buy a set of tires that you dont need. chasing the buck is what thats called. you could balance the tires ten times and still be less than a new set that will also have to be balanced. check the inside of your rim and clean any mud or crap off them, then balance, rotate and check alingment.

i hear ya, i'm 18 and get crap from mechanics all the time telling me i need to replace stuff when its totally fine and i tell them whats wrong and their speechless. I always say, "my dad was a mechanic for 13 years and he's taught me just about everything there is to know so don't BS me". Then they have a totally different attitude. Trying to get every cent they can out of everyone.....

I dont think he is trying to rip you off because if you look in the first pic it looks like your maybe 1 or 2/32" over the tread wear indicator, but I cant really tell from the pic

Ok, now that you have received several ideas from the group, there are several things to look at. I have been working at a SEARS tire store for 13 years changing tires. You said your dad was a mechanic, so he should be the first to tell you an Alignment will do nothing to correct a wobble or shaking front end. Your just giving the mechanic free money to set the toe on an XJ. Check your tie rods, wheel bearings, how old is the stearing stabilizer, swaybar links and like the post eariler, check to see if there is clumps of dirt on the inside of the rim. I can't count the number of times someone has come in complaining about a shaking in the tires and found mud, grass and dirt caked on the inside of the rim especially in the cold of winter. Likely the thread has worn off the edges of the tires and the balance is off as much as 1 to 2 oz which will give a huge wobble at 40-60mph. If the jeep is pulling hard to the left or right going down the road or the edges are worn off THEN an alignment is needed.
