i picked up an axel for my 00 xj, it was a c8.25 out of another 00 xj. now i pulled it out and started ripping into it and learned the easiest way to tell the gear set is to count the ring and pinion then calculate it. well i counted out a 43 ring and a 14 pinion. it calculates out to a 3.07 gear ratio. now i did a little investigation to see if i was crazy or not and alot of what i found with that gear set was out of the 80-90's diffs. now please correct me if im wrong and please tell me im not crazy but does all this sound kosher?

 

00 8.25s were 3:55s unless the rear axle was swapped

Did it come from an XJ that had a manual transmission? 5-speeds were equipped from the factory with 3.07 gears, although I am not sure how common manual transmissions were in the 2000 model year. At least that's what Dana 35 rears were loaded with when installed on a manual-transmission-equipped XJ.

 

that could be it. i could see that being my luck haha. thank you both for your info, ill just need to get to the bottom of this and probably re-gear.

 

My 97 thurty with a manual shift had the 307 gearing. Manual and auto's from factory had different gearing. Factory 8.25 I'm picking up had 3:55 running an auto.

x2 my 99 5spd has 3.07s, right off the build sheet.
