Default distributor help

I pulled my cap off today and it looks like the rotor has been digging into the terminals. And the top of the rotor is rubbing along the top of the cap. Is there any play in the rotor because i can wiggle it back and forth. So do you think the gears on the bottom of the distributor are worn. thanks

Are all of them evenly grooved? ifso, could just need to be replaced. I always get the professional series (some auto parts may call it gold series) cap & rotor for mine because the coil tends to burn the contacts on the cheaper ones... As far as play, there is usually a little because of the way the pieces are machined. If you feel like it is excessive, you may want to inspect the gear as it usually wears first. You will not have to worry about trying to get specific with timing, just put it back as you pulled it out with rotor pointing the same direction (will turn some as you remove and install) but the computer does all of the fine tuning.

I am going to try a new cap and rotor like you said and see how that goes for me. Thanks.

Biggest movement to worry about would be side to side as that would show that the bushings inside of it are worn but that is not a common problem...

I pulled the distributor because of the side to side motion. Now I am trying to install the new one and I can't get it started in the tube. It's like the tube is to tight or the distributor is to big. I can only get it in about a less than a inch. I put oil on the tube to ease it in.
this whole post sounds dirty but I can't put it any other way.

If it won't slide down easily try adding a little oil to the post, if that no worky then it's the wrong distrubor.. Did you take your old one back for the core yet? If not you could buy the busings and gear and fix it..Also make sure you get the mounting gasket or it'll leak oil from the distributor..trust me I know and just waiting till school is out to tackle it..

The cardone part # you need is 304692

yeah that is the one i got, Its almost like the bottom had a little to much material added to it when the remanufactured it. My old one gave me a little trouble when I pulled it out as well.

Well it should be tight but should slid in. All they do is take old ones clean em up replace the bushing and gear and maybe even put a new pickup coil/stater on it..
