I am going to replace my heater core in my -96 XJ and I just got it back from the shop after they emptied my ac system.
It looks like my evaporator is connected to some sort of "aluminium block" just before the firewall and that i should be able to use a simple wrench and disconnect it at the back and then the evaporator should be free to remove (after removing everything in the way on the inside ofcourse ;P).
That looks like an expansion valve. (My '99 has a fixed orifice tube instead.) You should be able to just disconnect it. There may be a thin metal temperature probe going from the metal disc on the side of the metal block into the evaporator. Can't tell from the photo, some valves have that and some don't. (If so note its location in the evaporator and put it back the same way, and use care since the metal tube is somewhat fragile.)
