dipstick caked in oil

I checked my oil level after my 1993 jeep cherokee wasnt running well and there in oil all the way up the dipstick. there was also some oil going to the air filter. any ideas? is my engine about to blow?

Did you wipe the dipstick off then recheck it?
If so, your oil level is WAY overfull. I would change the oil asap. The 4-banger should hold 4 quarts with filter change, and i believe the 6 cyl holds 5 quarts.
The oil level being that high would explain the oil in your air filter also. Its prolly blowing past your PVC/CCV valve in the valve cover and depositing on your air filter if the vent hose is still hooked to the airbox.
You might have other problems as far as the engine not running well goes, but getting the oil to the proper level is a start.
One more thing, if the air filter is soaked with oil, then replace that too. A clogged air filter will cause the engine to run rough.

It is just normal oil? Not frothy or cream colored? If it isn't just normal oil, your jeep might be using coolant as an oil replacement. If that is the case it might just be a head gasket, but it could be more serious (ex. cracked block/head). Look at the oil, and see if there is any evidence of coolant.
