Default Dimmer Switch Question

I searched the forums here, but didn't find anything I could use.

Here's my problem:

Installed aftermarket cd/mp3 deck into my '00 Cherokee Ltd. and upon doing so lost power to all the lights in my instrument cluster, heating controls, gear lights and 4wd lights. I checked all the fuses, replaced the dimmer/headlight switch and still nothing. If I pull the headlight switch out very slowly the lights will come on, but once it clicks into running lights or headlights, nothing is illuminated, but headlights and taillights work, just can't see anything inside vehicle. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Maybe the ignition switch? (not the cylindar, the electric box that sits on the steering column under the dash)

sounds like a wire is crossed going to the radio, could make it draw too many amps and damage the dimmer

Thanks for the input so far, I found an article with a similar problem from the world of google and some time...so i checked all my grounds, cut my new stereo out, re-wired it, checked it with the factory radio, and still nothing...and on top of about 4 hours of wiring and trying new things I didn't realize that my taillights were also out due to this (which I know think may be a short somewhere), and got pulled over.

I'll post up some more when I take it to my electrical guy in a couple hours, and see if it was a simple wiring error or something more.
Thanks again for the input
