Default differential bearings

I have a stock D35 with 3.55 gears and a factory limited slip diff. I noticed a noise from the rear end while driving. After further diagnosis, it appears that my differential bearings, more specifically pinion bearing, are going. A local shop quoted me $600 to replace all differential bearings. I found an open diff axle on CL with matching gears and 190k miles for $100. I want to get back in the road so the $100 open axle swap seems like the best option but I like the limited slip. What would you do?

Your locking carrier should be able to be swapped over to the fresher diff right ?

You would just have to take your time, do some homework and set up the gear ride and lash again is all. This is easier than most think it is. All you have to remember is that the pinion is different in diameter, and the ring is the same size in diameter but thicker or thinner where it bolts to the carrier to make the different gear ratios.

If it wasn't a Dana 35 I would say buy the open one and throw a lunchbox locker in there, but If you are going to spend the money why not just look for a used Chrysler 8.25 and swap it in.

Ended up getting the open D35 axle and will start swapping it tomorrow. This jeep is a cruiser and shouldn’t see any off-road. The guy had a 8.25 for $25 more but I didn’t bring extra cash and he wasn’t feeling generous. It wasn’t meant to be.

It’s an old N.C. highway patrol black and silver paint scheme.
