ok the two motors take different gaskets most likely the holes in the head are bigger than the manifolds if it was mine i would get the correct head for renix not to burst you bubble have you searced the 0331 head and its cracking problem ??

no its a 4 and auto. we started this thinking a motor swap would be easy and the guy sold us a bum motor. so we have been spending way to much time just trying to get it right!!! so i guess when the old man gets home i will let him know and we will go from there. these things need to come with warning lables on them

so we had bad compression on the head that was on the jeep, picked up new head and are about to put it on when we noticed that one has a sending unit and one does not. do i need to worrie about it. i believe its the temp sending unit. i tryed to upload pics but it hates me
. the hole is on the back of the head on the driver side.
. the hole is on the back of the head on the driver side.Check the head number - the 2686 head will not replace any other head (it bolts to the block, but the manifold setup is different,) and the 7120 and 0630 will not replace the 0331 (exhaust ports are larger than the primaries.) The head casting number can be found on the driver's side, outside the valve cover rail, on top, between the #3 and #4 exhaust ports (centre longwise.)
If you do not need the port and want to plug it, get a 1/8" NPT brass pipe plug at the local hardware store, coat the threads with PTFE or RTV, and tighten two flats past finger tight (about 1/3-turn with a wrench, once you've gotten it as far as your fingers will easily go.)

That's the sending unit for the temperature gage - deleted for 1996. The 2686 (1987-1990) and 7120 (1991-1995) heads had it, the 0630 and 03310 do not.

The later (TUPY) 0331 head is actually pretty good.
However, if you're going to adapt anything to RENIX, be prepared to do some work to at least get the intake lined up (I haven't gotten all of the parts I need to figure out just what and do a writeup at the moment. Workin' on it...)
