Different front and rear tire sizes
Hi all.
The tires I have on my newly bought 92 Cherokee are going to be replaced.
However, the front tires are p215/60 R15.
The rears are p195/65 R15.
Does this indicate different rim width or are the rims all around the same?
I would like to put four 235/75 R15's all around. Can I?

put the 235s on but u could run the others under 2 conditions:
1. u NEVER use 4wd it would buck so bad and snap something.
2. maybe possible if you have the 242 T-case which allows the 2 axles to spin at different speeds!

The tires were on there when I bought it. Though they look the same they read different sizes. I know it has been used in 4 wheel drive since then.
Here's a piece of the history of that transfer case.
"The Jeep NP242 transfer case was introduced in the 1987 model year as a replacement for the NP228. The 242 premiered in the XJ Cherokee / Wagoneer and MJ Commache as the SelecTrac option. It was used in the 1991-1998 ZJ Grand Cherokee. The 242 persisted throughout the full run of XJ Cherokees and continued on in the 2002 KJ Liberty. The 242 was originally tagged as the 242AMC, and as ownership of AMC was taken over by Chrysler, it was later designated as the 242J. This transfer case was later called the NVG (New Venture Gear) 242."
Looks like that's the one.
Still want to get better tires than the street tires on there now.

Yes you need way better tires, those are the same as on my MIATA!! lol (actual tires on Miata are 195-50-14)

Good grief! I used the tire calculator and the tires on there now only measure
25.15 and 24.98 inches overall diameter. Never realized how tiny they were.lol

My Goodyear Wrangler Radials (P235/75R15's) didn't rub in my 93 XJ, but they do rub just a small amount in my 01 XJ. I think the rubber on the inside of the fenders are a little different. I've only noticed this turning the wheel hard left in reverse. Nevertheless, they are definitely best tire size for a stock height XJ.

That's incorrect. The first number is the section width. The section is the buldge from sidewall to sidewall. It's not the actual tread width.

I have 31's on the back of mine, and 28's on the front. It works fine in 4wd, so long as things are slick. Which is when you should be using 4wd anyways. I have a front U-joint that all the needle bearings fell out of. You can hear it ubject everytime I put it in 4wd, but I have yet to have anything "snap"... Trust me, if it could break, it would for me. As of a few weeks ago, my front axle decided it only needed 3 control arms attached.
