The ECU in your '96 XJ reads off the t-stat housing coolant temp sensor ('97 up do as well) and the ORIGINAL factory '96 motor had a gauge sending unit located in the rear drivers side of the head. U now have a '97 up cylinder head.....no gauge sending unit in those (rear drivers side of head). On your '96 XJ u have a dangling wire/connector in the vacinity of rear drivers side of the head (unless someone cut it off) but nothing to plug it to because u now have a '97 up head.

If u go with the Hesco dual drilled/tapped t-stat cover, u/your mechanic will need to be very cautious with the gauge sending unit/wires as u can see how it will protrude toward the rad and be very close to the rad fan.

Try a right angle fitting, not sure if this will effect the sensor or not? What do you think djb383?

It might work, there will be some signal......but, it's my experience that a sending unit/sensor signals the best/most accurate info when the tip of the sender is immersed directly in the stream of flowing coolant.

i decided to go the scan gauge route, the oil pressure unit came back with nothing when he grounded it, i don't know what that means by as it stands all the gauges work sans the top two. he told me the motor runs strong and whoever did the work did a good job, i scheduled a compression test, was only like 80 dollars.
