difference between loose torque converter and engine knock
I bought a 91 cherokee for 200 bucks knowing it wouldn't move once i got it running. He replaced the engine and axle from a 95.He said he thought the tourque convertor was loose and told me it ran when he towed it there but after sitting it wouldn't start.I drove it once 6 months ago and the tilt was broke in the steering column so it moved left, right ,up and down while your trying to turn by the time i got it the key mechanism was broke so i had to replace the steering column. After hearing it run there is a knock which increases when i try to put it in gear.I have a spare 88 manual cherokee that did run until i broke the fuel pump and rear u joints but it has 300000 miles on it and the 91 has 140000 so i think it is better to invest in the 91.If the torque convertor is loose or broken is it better financially to make it standard or fix the torque converter? If anyone has any ideas on this help would be appreciated.

Wow lol $200 impressive. I'm not an automatic nerd but the AW4s last forever, I think they should be junk yard-able. Not certain of a year range to pluck one out of but I'd guess 91-95

My dad had the same problem with his 93' it got pretty bad, if it is a loose torque converter you can quieten it down a bit by taking the inspection cover off of the bell housing and tightening the four bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel. I guess its a common problem with jeeps.
